Understanding the February 2026 Rule Change: How Medication May Affect Your VA Disability Rating

A major VA regulation change effective February 17, 2026, alters how disability ratings are evaluated when veterans use medication. Instead of considering how severe a condition would be without treatment, VA examiners must now rate disabilities based on how symptoms present while medicated. This shift could significantly reduce ratings for veterans whose conditions are controlled by medication—but remain serious beneath the surface.
